About me

My name is Claire Dekandelaer, and I’m the architect behind Brik.

Trained at UCL in Brussels, I completed part of my master’s studies at the University of Chongqing, China, where I developed a deep appreciation for vernacular architecture—the traditional, place-based building methods people have used for centuries to shape their environments with local materials, traditions, and wisdom.

Professionally, I have gained hands-on experience across Belgium—working with LRArchitectes in Wallonia and MADAM Architectuur in Flanders and Brussels—enabling me to navigate projects fluently across all three regions, in French, Dutch, and English.

Opening my own practice was a natural step, driven by the desire to build differently.
My work weaves together architectural quality with deep ecological awareness and social responsibility. Rooted in the local landscape and built environment, I believe architecture must respond to the challenges of our time: climate change, resource scarcity, and the need for more inclusive, local, and resilient ways of living.

Through every project, I explore how we can build with less, reuse more, and design spaces that feel both grounded and generous. Without ever compromising on comfort or quality, I aim to create architecture that is thoughtful, tactile, and quietly radical—shaped by context, collaboration, and care.

I place great value on working with what’s already there—respecting the atmosphere, identity, and layers of existing buildings and locations. Whether it’s a renovation or new-build, the goal is not to erase, but to enhance—preserving the soul of a place while gently adapting it to new needs and uses.

The name Brik reflects the essence of my approach—rooted in building blocks that are simple, honest, and essential. It symbolizes construction as a collective process—layer by layer, piece by piece—reusing and revaluing what already exists to create something stronger and more sustainable.
